Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz composed primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). It forms through layers of mineral deposits within volcanic cavities and ancient lava flows, creating the distinctive bands, swirls and natural patterns that make every piece unique.
 
Part of the quartz family, Agate develops slowly over time as silica-rich groundwater deposits microscopic quartz crystals into rock voids. Different mineral inclusions create the wide variety of colours and formations seen across Agate types, from earthy neutrals to vivid blues, greens and pinks.
 
With a hardness of 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, Agate is a durable and versatile stone commonly used in jewellery, carvings and spiritual tools. It is found worldwide, with notable deposits in Brazil, Uruguay, India, Madagascar, Mexico and the United States.
