Baltic Amber is an extraordinary organic gemstone formed from the fossilised resin of ancient trees. Unlike crystals and minerals, Amber began as sticky resin produced by prehistoric forests tens of millions of years ago. Over immense periods of burial, chemical change and geological processes, this resin gradually transformed into the beautiful golden material we know as Amber.
Baltic Amber is generally around 34â48 million years old and originates from ancient forests of the Baltic region. Deposits were later transported and redistributed through geological and glacial processes, with pieces continuing to wash onto shores around the Baltic Sea today.
Its colours range from pale buttery yellow and warm honey through golden orange, cognac and deep reddish-brown. Some pieces are beautifully transparent, while others are cloudy or opaque. Ancient plant material, bubbles and occasionally insects can become trapped within the original resin, preserving tiny glimpses of ecosystems that existed millions of years ago.
Amber is remarkably lightweight and relatively soft, measuring around 2â2.5 on the Mohs scale. When rubbed, it can develop a static electrical chargeâan observation known since ancient times.
The Greek word for Amber, elektron, later contributed to the terminology associated with electricity.

Almandine Garnet is one of the most recognised members of the Garnet mineral group, known for its rich red, burgundy and reddish-brown colouring. It is an iron aluminium silicate and commonly forms as beautifully defined crystals within metamorphic rocks subjected to significant heat and pressure.
Rather than being a single mineral, Garnet describes a group of closely related silicate minerals that share a similar crystal structure but differ in chemical composition. The Garnet family includes Almandine, Pyrope, Spessartine, Grossular, Andradite and Uvarovite, producing colours ranging from deep red and orange through green, yellow and many shades in between.
Almandine is one of the most widespread Garnet varieties and commonly develops in metamorphic rocks such as schist and gneiss. Its crystals frequently form in distinctive rounded dodecahedral shapes and can range from translucent gem-quality material to darker, opaque specimens.
