Amber is a fascinating organic gemstone formed from ancient tree resin that hardened and fossilised over millions of years. Unlike crystals and minerals that develop through geological crystallisation, Amber began as sticky resin produced by prehistoric trees, gradually undergoing chemical and physical changes as it was buried and preserved within sediments.
 
Amber is composed primarily of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and is remarkably lightweight and warm to the touch compared with most mineral gemstones. Its colours range from pale buttery yellow and golden honey through orange, cognac and deep reddish-brown, with some varieties occurring in cream, greenish and even rare blue tones.
 
One of Amber's most fascinating characteristics is its ability to preserve tiny pieces of the ancient world. Some specimens contain insects, plant material, pollen, air bubbles and other inclusions trapped within the resin millions of years ago, providing scientists with remarkable information about prehistoric ecosystems.
 
With a hardness of only around 2–2.5 on the Mohs scale, Amber is relatively soft and should be handled carefully. It can scratch easily and may be affected by excessive heat, chemicals and prolonged exposure to strong sunlight. Important deposits occur throughout the Baltic region, the Dominican Republic, Myanmar and Indonesia, with Baltic Amber being particularly well known and extensively traded.
