Amber is a fascinating organic gemstone formed from ancient tree resin that hardened and fossilised over millions of years. Unlike crystals and minerals that develop through geological crystallisation, Amber began as sticky resin produced by prehistoric trees, gradually undergoing chemical and physical changes as it was buried and preserved within sediments.
 
Amber is composed primarily of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and is remarkably lightweight and warm to the touch compared with most mineral gemstones. Its colours range from pale buttery yellow and golden honey through orange, cognac and deep reddish-brown, with some varieties occurring in cream, greenish and even rare blue tones.

Carnelian is a vibrant orange to reddish-brown variety of Chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of Quartz. Its warm colouring comes from iron oxides within the stone and can range from translucent pale orange and rich fiery red through to deeper rusty and brownish tones.
 
With a hardness of around 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, Carnelian is relatively durable and has been valued as a gemstone, carving material and decorative stone for thousands of years. Significant deposits occur in India, Brazil, Madagascar and several other regions around the world.
