Apophyllite is a beautiful hydrated potassium calcium silicate mineral known for its exceptional clarity, brilliant lustre and distinctive crystal formations. It commonly forms in striking pyramidal and prismatic structures and may also occur as druzy across a matrix or alongside other minerals. Clear and white are the most common colours, although Apophyllite can also be found in shades of grey, yellow, red and green, with Green Apophyllite being particularly rare.
 
First described in the early 1800s, the name Apophyllite comes from Greek words relating to “leaf” or “to flake off”, referring to the unusual way the mineral separates or flakes when heated.
Some of the most beautiful and recognisable Apophyllite specimens come from India, particularly Maharashtra, where they form within ancient basalt deposits and are frequently found alongside Zeolite minerals such as Stilbite.
