Black Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when silica-rich molten lava cools so rapidly that there is not enough time for an ordered crystal structure to develop. This rapid formation creates its characteristic glossy black appearance and distinctive conchoidal, or shell-like, fracture.
 
Unlike crystalline minerals, Obsidian is technically an amorphous volcanic glass. When fractured, it can produce exceptionally sharp edges, which led to its use for thousands of years in blades, arrowheads, cutting tools, mirrors and ceremonial objects by cultures throughout the world.
 
Obsidian occurs wherever suitable volcanic activity has taken place, with significant deposits found in Mexico, the United States, Iceland, Italy, Japan and many other volcanic regions.
