Black Tourmaline, or Schorl, is the most abundant member of the Tourmaline mineral group. It is a complex borosilicate mineral rich in iron, which is responsible for its characteristic deep black to brownish-black colouring.

Black Tourmaline commonly forms as elongated prismatic crystals with distinctive vertical striations running along their surface. It occurs in granite pegmatites and metamorphic rocks and is frequently found alongside minerals such as Quartz, Feldspar and Mica. Crystals may occur individually, embedded within matrix or as impressive radiating and clustered formations.

With a hardness of approximately 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale, Black Tourmaline is relatively durable. Tourmaline is also scientifically recognised for its pyroelectric and piezoelectric properties, meaning an electrical charge can develop across the crystal under particular changes in temperature or mechanical pressure.

Significant deposits of Black Tourmaline occur throughout the world, including Brazil, Namibia, Mozambique, Madagascar, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the United States.

Energetically, Black Tourmaline is one of the crystals most strongly associated with protection, purification and grounding. Working through the Root Chakra, it may encourage greater stability and connection with the Earth, particularly when your energy feels scattered, overwhelmed or unsettled.

Black Tourmaline is traditionally used to create energetic boundaries and may be placed around the home, workplace or sacred space as part of protection and cleansing practices. It is also commonly carried or worn by those who feel particularly sensitive to the emotions or energies of the people and environments around them.

Its grounding qualities may encourage excess or chaotic energy to be released and redirected, supporting a calmer and more centred state. Black Tourmaline may be particularly useful during meditation, cleansing practices or situations where stronger energetic boundaries are desired.

Black Tourmaline is also frequently placed near computers, televisions and other electronics within modern crystal practices. While it is traditionally associated with energetic shielding around these devices, there is no scientific evidence that Black Tourmaline absorbs or neutralises harmful electromagnetic radiation. Its use in this way is best understood as an energetic or spiritual practice rather than physical EMF protection.
