Bloodstone, also known as Heliotrope, is a variety of Chalcedony composed primarily of microcrystalline Quartz. Its deep green colouring comes from iron-rich minerals, while the distinctive red inclusions are caused by iron oxide (hematite), giving the appearance of drops of blood within the stone.
 
It forms within sedimentary and volcanic environments and is commonly found in regions such as India, Brazil, Australia and parts of Africa. With a hardness of 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, Bloodstone is a durable and widely used stone for carving, jewellery and talismans throughout history.
