Bytownite is a rare calcium-rich member of the Plagioclase Feldspar Group and a close relative of Labradorite and Anorthite. It was first discovered near Bytown, now known as Ottawa, Canada, from which it takes its name.
Although often sold under the trade name "Golden Labradorite" due to its beautiful golden colouring and occasional flashes of iridescence, Bytownite is not technically a Labradorite. Both minerals belong to the same plagioclase series, however Bytownite contains a higher percentage of calcium, making it a distinct mineral species in its own right.
Bytownite occurs in shades of golden yellow, honey, cream, orange and brown, with notable deposits found in Canada, Mexico, Madagascar, Norway, South Africa, the United States and Australia.
Energetically, Bytownite is often regarded as a stone of empowerment, spiritual awakening and transformation. Its warm, solar energy is believed to inspire courage, confidence and inner strength while encouraging a harmonious balance between logic and intuition. This unique combination makes it a beautiful companion during times of change, helping one navigate transitions with clarity and purpose.
