Carnelian is an orange to reddish variety of Chalcedony, though it can also appear in very dark tones, occasionally nearing black. One of the most popular members of the Quartz family, its name comes from the medieval Latin Corneolus, referencing the Cornelian cherry, a plant native to southern Europe. Carnelian has been used by civilisations across the world throughout history, with most specimens today sourced from Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar and India. With a hardness of 6.5–7, it is both durable and energetically potent.
