Cave Calcite, also known as White Aragonite, is a calcium carbonate mineral and a natural variety of aragonite that crystallises in long, spiky formations and large botryoidal patterns often resembling soft, cloud-like growths. Although commonly referred to as calcite in the crystal trade, these formations are mineralogically classified as aragonite due to their orthorhombic crystal structure, despite sharing the same chemical composition as calcite (CaCO₃). With a Mohs hardness of approximately 4, White Aragonite is relatively soft and brittle, reflecting its delicate appearance despite forming over immense periods of geological time.
 
White Aragonite typically forms in caves and limestone systems under very specific conditions involving mineral-rich water, stable temperatures and the presence of magnesium. Its colour ranges from bright white through to cream, tan and deep brown, and specimens can vary greatly in size, from small clusters only a few inches tall to large formations exceeding a foot in height. While found in many locations worldwide, some of the most abundant sources include Mexico and Spain.
