Much of the Citrine available on the market today is heat-treated Amethyst (and occasionally Smoky Quartz). Through controlled heating, the iron within these quartz varieties changes oxidation state, turning purple or smoky tones into warm yellow, orange or amber shades. This process is permanent, stable and widely accepted within the crystal and gem trade. From a geological perspective, these stones remain Amethyst or Smoky Quartz, though they are commonly sold as Citrine.
 
Visually, heat-treated Amethyst often displays deeper orange or burnt hues, sometimes concentrated at the crystal tips, while natural Citrine usually has a lighter, more uniform colour and softer glow. Both are genuine quartz; the distinction lies in their formation and treatment — an important consideration for collectors and those who value transparency and mineral accuracy.
