Diopside is a calcium magnesium silicate mineral with the chemical formula CaMgSi₂O₆, belonging to the pyroxene group. It crystallises in the monoclinic crystal system and commonly forms in metamorphic rocks such as marble, as well as in igneous rocks and skarn deposits created through contact metamorphism.
The rich green variety known as Chrome Diopside gains its colour from traces of chromium, while iron can contribute to darker green or brownish tones. With a hardness of 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale, Diopside is moderately durable and best suited to mindful handling in jewellery and carvings.
Diopside is sometimes confused with Dioptase; however, they are entirely different minerals. Dioptase is a copper silicate with a more intense emerald colour and a lower hardness (around 5 on the Mohs scale), whereas Diopside is a calcium magnesium silicate and typically appears more earthy or slightly softer in tone.
