Dumortierite is an aluminium borosilicate mineral best known for its beautiful denim-blue through to deep royal and violet-blue colouring. It commonly forms as fibrous or columnar crystals within aluminium-rich metamorphic rocks and can also occur as fine blue needles, fibres and wispy inclusions within Quartz, creating the material often known as Dumortierite Quartz.
 
Its colour is most commonly blue, although Dumortierite can also occur in violet, brown, greenish-blue and occasionally pinkish tones. With a hardness of around 7–8.5 on the Mohs scale depending on the specimen and aggregate, it can be relatively durable. Its formation under significant heat and pressure gives this striking mineral a beautiful physical representation of strength, transformation and resilience.
 
Dumortierite was first described in the late 1800s and named in honour of French palaeontologist Eugène Dumortier. Deposits have since been discovered in several locations around the world, including Brazil, Madagascar, France, Namibia, Sri Lanka and the United States.
