Apatite (Ca₅(PO₄)₃(F,Cl,OH)) is a phosphate mineral that often forms in pegmatites and metamorphic deposits, commonly alongside Quartz, Feldspar and Mica. The vivid green colouring comes from trace amounts of iron, giving it a distinctive brilliance highly valued by collectors. With a hardness of 5 on the Mohs scale, Apatite is durable enough to display gemmy transparency, though softer than its Quartz host.
