Hematite is a common iron oxide mineral known for its metallic lustre and deep steel-grey to black appearance. It can form in many different habits, including massive, botryoidal, tabular and the much rarer rhombohedral crystals. Despite its dark exterior, Hematite produces a distinctive reddish-brown powder when scratched or ground, which inspired its name from the Greek word haima, meaning "blood."
 
Originally referred to as Haematite, the mineral was officially named Hematite in 1773 by French mineralogist Jean-Baptiste Romé de l'Isle. However, humanity's connection with this remarkable mineral reaches much further back in time. Archaeological discoveries near Mossel Bay in South Africa have revealed that Hematite was being used by early humans around 164,000 years ago, including as a red pigment for markings and cave art, making it one of the earliest known minerals utilised by humankind.
