Hemimorphite is a hydrous zinc silicate recognised for its soft blue, turquoise and occasionally white or green hues. It commonly forms as fan-shaped tabular crystals or bubbly botryoidal coatings that sparkle delicately across host rock, often displaying a fibrous or drusy texture with a bright, glassy lustre. Frequently mistaken for Smithsonite, Hemimorphite can be identified by its distinctive crystal habit and shimmering surface.
 
Once known as “Electric Calamine,” this unique mineral was named for its unusual asymmetric growth, with each end of the crystal forming differently. Fine specimens are sourced from Algeria, Mexico, Greece, Italy and Namibia, where its gentle colour and uplifting presence make it especially sought after.
