Kunzite is the pink to lilac variety of Spodumene, a lithium aluminium silicate mineral recognised for its delicate colouring, beautiful transparency and naturally elongated crystal formations. Its soft shades can range from almost colourless blush pink through to vibrant pink, lavender and violet.
 
First identified in California in the early 1900s, Kunzite was named after mineralogist and gem expert George Frederick Kunz. Significant deposits have since been found in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Brazil, Madagascar and the United States.
 
Kunzite commonly forms within lithium-rich pegmatites and has a hardness of around 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale. Despite this hardness, it has perfect cleavage and can be vulnerable to knocks or impact, so specimens and jewellery benefit from careful handling. Its colour may also fade with prolonged exposure to strong sunlight, making it best stored away from direct light.
