Kunzite is a beautiful pink to lilac variety of Spodumene, a lithium aluminium silicate mineral. Its delicate colouring ranges from almost colourless blush pink through soft rose, lavender and violet-pink, with the colour primarily associated with traces of manganese within its crystal structure.
 
Kunzite forms within lithium-rich granite pegmatites, where slow cooling allows large, well-developed crystals to grow. It commonly forms as elongated, vertically striated crystals and can display noticeable differences in colour depending on the direction from which it is viewed, an optical property known as pleochroism.
 
The mineral was first recognised as a distinct gem variety in California in the early 1900s and was named in honour of mineralogist and gem expert George Frederick Kunz. Important sources of Kunzite include Afghanistan, Pakistan, Brazil, Madagascar and the United States.
 
With a hardness of approximately 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, Kunzite may appear relatively durable, but it has perfect cleavage and can be vulnerable to knocks and sudden impacts. Its colour may also fade with prolonged exposure to strong sunlight, so specimens and jewellery are best kept away from extended direct sunlight.
