Labradorite is a captivating member of the feldspar mineral family, renowned for the spectacular flashes of colour that appear to move across its surface as it catches the light. This optical phenomenon is known as labradorescence and can produce brilliant displays of blue, green, gold, yellow, orange and occasionally violet.
Labradorescence is created by the interaction of light with extremely fine internal layers within the feldspar structure. Rather than the colours coming from pigments within the stone, light is reflected and scattered between these microscopic layers, revealing the extraordinary flashes hidden beneath Labradorite's otherwise grey, charcoal or greenish surface.
Labradorite has a hardness of around 6â6.5 on the Mohs scale and forms within igneous rocks as molten material slowly cools and crystallises. It was named after Labrador in Canada, where it was formally described in the 18th century. Significant deposits are also found in Madagascar, Finland, Norway and other regions around the world.
Energetically, Labradorite is traditionally associated with magic, protection, transformation and spiritual awakening. Its ability to reveal unexpected flashes of colour beneath an unassuming surface beautifully reflects its metaphysical association with discovering what lies beneath the obvious or familiar.
Working across the entire chakra system, Labradorite may encourage greater energetic balance while being particularly valued for intuitive and spiritual work. It is often chosen during periods of transition, personal growth and self-discovery, when old beliefs or patterns are being questioned and a new direction is beginning to emerge.
Labradorite is strongly associated with intuition, psychic awareness and exploring the subconscious. It may encourage greater trust in your inner guidance while supporting discernment and helping bring intuitive impressions into conscious awareness.
Traditionally regarded as a protective stone, Labradorite is often used to strengthen energetic boundaries and protect the aura during spiritual, intuitive or energetic work. Its grounding qualities may help maintain a sense of stability while exploring deeper levels of awareness.
Its transformative energy may also encourage resilience and confidence during periods of change. Rather than resisting the unknown, Labradorite may inspire curiosity, courage and a willingness to recognise possibilities that were previously hidden from view.
