Larimar is a rare and beautiful blue variety of Pectolite, a sodium calcium silicate mineral with the chemical formula NaCa₂Si₃O₈(OH). While Pectolite itself occurs in several locations around the world, the distinctive blue material known as Larimar is found only in the Dominican Republic, making it particularly sought after by collectors and jewellery lovers.

Its extraordinary colouring ranges from soft white and pale sky blue through turquoise-blue to deeper ocean blues, often displaying swirling, cloud-like patterns reminiscent of sunlight moving across tropical water. Its blue colour is associated primarily with copper occurring within the mineral.

Larimar formed through volcanic activity within the Dominican Republic, where mineral-rich fluids crystallised within cavities and fractures in volcanic rock. Over time, erosion released some of this material from its host rock, with pieces historically discovered downstream and along coastal areas before the primary deposits were located inland.

With a hardness of approximately 4.5–5 on the Mohs scale, Larimar is relatively soft and should be treated with care. Prolonged exposure to strong sunlight and heat should be avoided, as its beautiful blue colouring may fade over time.

Energetically, Larimar is traditionally associated with calming, soothing energy and emotional communication. Working particularly through the Throat and Heart Chakras, it may encourage you to recognise your emotions and communicate them with greater honesty, compassion and confidence.

Larimar has become strongly associated with Goddess energy and the Divine Feminine. Its energy may encourage connection with the nurturing, intuitive, receptive and compassionate aspects of ourselves. These qualities are not limited by gender, making Larimar equally suited to anyone wishing to explore and strengthen their connection with feminine energy.

Through the Throat Chakra, Larimar may support the ability to express emotions, needs and boundaries rather than suppressing them. It encourages speaking from the heart while maintaining respect for yourself and others, making it a beautiful stone for those learning to communicate more openly and authentically.

Larimar is also traditionally regarded as an emotional cleansing stone. Its gentle energy may be chosen during periods of stress, fear, anger or emotional overwhelm, supporting calming practices and creating space to acknowledge and process difficult emotions.

Its connection with self-love and nurturing may encourage you to give your own emotional needs the same consideration you offer others. In this way, Larimar can be a beautiful reminder that compassion does not mean abandoning your boundaries and that softness and personal strength can exist together.
