Malachite is a striking copper carbonate hydroxide mineral recognised for its vivid green colouring and distinctive bands, swirls and concentric patterns. Its shades can range from bright emerald and grassy green through to deep forest green, often occurring together in beautifully contrasting layers.
It forms primarily within the oxidised zones of copper deposits, where copper-rich minerals are altered through interaction with water, oxygen and carbonates. Malachite may develop as fibrous masses, botryoidal formations, stalactites and layered deposits, and is frequently found alongside other copper minerals such as Azurite, Chrysocolla and Cuprite.
With a hardness of around 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale, Malachite is relatively soft and benefits from careful handling. Significant deposits occur in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Namibia and Russia, with the Congo particularly renowned for producing richly coloured and beautifully patterned specimens.
