Mookaite is a bold, grounding stone of timeless strength — often associated with the Earth’s ancient pulse, ancestral wisdom and the concept of the ageless spirit. Visually rich in deep reds, mustard yellows, creams and burgundy tones, it reflects the warmth of the Australian landscape and carries a steady, earthy presence many people find comforting and stabilising.
Geologically, Mookaite is a silicified radiolarite, commonly grouped within the jasper family. It formed during the Cretaceous period (approximately 90–120 million years ago) when inland seas covered large parts of Australia. Microscopic marine organisms called radiolarians lived in these waters; when they died, their silica-rich skeletons settled onto the seabed. Over millions of years, these sediments compacted and were replaced by microcrystalline quartz, while iron-rich minerals infused the stone — creating its distinctive earthy colours.
Red and burgundy tones are linked to iron oxide (hematite), yellow and mustard hues to limonite and goethite, and cream sections to higher concentrations of silica. With a hardness of 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, Mookaite is durable and well suited to jewellery and carving. It is found exclusively within the Windalia Radiolarite formation near Mooka Creek in the Kennedy Ranges of Western Australia, making it uniquely Australian.
