Moonstone is a beautiful member of the feldspar mineral family, treasured for the soft, floating glow that appears to move beneath its surface. This distinctive optical phenomenon is known as adularescence and can create a pearly white, silvery or blue sheen reminiscent of moonlight moving across water.
True Moonstone is most commonly an intergrowth of orthoclase and albite feldspar. As the mineral slowly cools during formation, extremely fine internal layers develop. Light entering the stone scatters between these layers, producing the characteristic luminous glow for which Moonstone is renowned.
Moonstone has a hardness of around 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale and is found in igneous and metamorphic environments. Important sources include Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar, Myanmar and Tanzania. Although reasonably hard, feldspar has distinct cleavage and Moonstone should still be treated with care to protect it from knocks and damage.
