Morganite is a beautiful pink to peach variety of Beryl, belonging to the same mineral family as Emerald and Aquamarine. Its chemical composition is beryllium aluminium silicate, Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈, with its delicate pink, rose and peach colouring primarily associated with traces of manganese within the crystal structure.
 
Morganite forms within granite pegmatites, where mineral-rich fluids and extremely slow cooling can produce beautifully developed crystals. It may occur as transparent gem-quality crystals or larger translucent formations, with colours ranging from the palest blush pink through peach, salmon, rose and soft violet-pink.
 
First recognised as a distinct gem variety in the early 20th century, Morganite was named in honour of financier and mineral collector J. P. Morgan. Important deposits have been found in Brazil, Madagascar, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Mozambique and the United States.
 
With a hardness of approximately 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale, Morganite is relatively durable and is widely used in jewellery. Its beautiful pastel colouring, transparency and connection with the Beryl family have also made high-quality natural specimens particularly desirable among mineral collectors.
