Pāua Shell (pronounced pah-wah) comes from the New Zealand abalone mollusc, known for its incredible iridescent blues, greens and purples. It is one of the most colourful natural shells in the world, formed over many years as the pāua builds its inner lining from layers of calcium carbonate and proteins. These layers refract light, creating the shimmering rainbow effect known as nacre or mother-of-pearl.
 
Geologically, pāua shells are not minerals but biogenic gemstones — created by living organisms rather than geological processes.
