Peach Satin Spar is a naturally coloured variety of Gypsum with the chemical formula CaSO₄·2H₂O. It forms in evaporite environments where mineral-rich waters gradually evaporate, leaving behind deposits of crystallising Gypsum. Its beautiful peach, orange and soft salmon colouring is associated with iron oxide and other mineral impurities within the material.
Its long, parallel crystal fibres create the silky sheen and luminous bands characteristic of Satin Spar. When polished, these fibres produce a beautiful moving band of light known as chatoyancy, giving Peach Satin Spar its distinctive warm, glowing appearance.
Although commonly sold as “Peach Selenite,” Peach Satin Spar is physically distinct from true Selenite. True Selenite is the clear, transparent crystalline variety of Gypsum, while Satin Spar is milky, fibrous and chatoyant. Both are forms of Gypsum and share many traditional metaphysical associations, but their crystal formations and appearance are different.
With a hardness of only 2 on the Mohs scale, Peach Satin Spar is very soft and scratches easily. It should be handled gently and kept away from prolonged contact with water, as repeated moisture exposure can gradually damage Gypsum.
