The pentagram is a five-pointed star and one of the world's oldest and most enduring symbols. It has appeared across different cultures, religions and spiritual traditions for thousands of years, with its meaning changing considerably throughout history.
 
Within modern witchcraft, Wicca and many Pagan traditions, the upright pentagram is commonly associated with protection, balance, the elements and the relationship between the physical and spiritual worlds.
 
When the pentagram is enclosed within a circle, it is commonly called a pentacle.
✨ The Five Points
Each point is traditionally associated with one of the five elements:
🔥 Fire — passion, transformation, action and will
🌬️ Air — intellect, communication, thought and inspiration
🌊 Water — emotion, intuition, healing and flow
🌍 Earth — grounding, stability, abundance and the physical world
✨ Spirit — higher consciousness, divine connection and the unseen
 
With Spirit positioned at the uppermost point, the upright pentagram can represent Spirit existing in harmony with the four physical elements. Together, the five points symbolise balance, wholeness and the interconnected nature of all things.
 
⭕ The Pentacle
When surrounded by a circle, the pentagram becomes a pentacle. The circle may represent wholeness, unity, eternity, the cycles of nature and the creation or containment of sacred space.
Within magical practice, the pentacle is commonly used as a symbol of protection and may be worn as jewellery, displayed within the home, incorporated into an altar or used during ritual and spellwork.
