Peridot is the gem-quality variety of Olivine, a magnesium-iron silicate mineral with the chemical formula (Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄. Unlike many gemstones whose colour comes from trace impurities, Peridot's distinctive green is an inherent part of its mineral composition, produced by iron within its crystal structure.
 
Its colour ranges from bright yellow-green and golden-lime through to rich olive green, with the most vibrant greens particularly prized as gemstones. Peridot has a hardness of around 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale and a beautiful vitreous, glass-like lustre.
 
Olivine forms under extraordinary conditions deep within the Earth's upper mantle and can be brought towards the surface by volcanic activity. It is commonly associated with basaltic lavas and ultramafic rocks. Olivine crystals have even been discovered within certain meteorites, including pallasites, giving this fascinating mineral both terrestrial and extraterrestrial occurrences.
