Prasiolite is a beautiful pale green variety of Quartz with the chemical formula SiOâ‚‚. It is sometimes marketed as Green Amethyst, although Prasiolite is the more accurate name. Its colour can range from delicate mint and sage green through to slightly deeper yellow-green tones.
Prasiolite is unusual because naturally occurring material is quite rare. Its green colour develops when particular iron-bearing varieties of Quartz are exposed to specific heating conditions. While this transformation can occur naturally through geological processes, much of the Prasiolite available commercially is produced by carefully heat-treating suitable Amethyst or, in some cases, through irradiation followed by heating.
Like other varieties of Quartz, Prasiolite has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and a vitreous, glass-like lustre. Brazil is particularly well known as a source of material capable of producing Prasiolite, with natural occurrences of green Quartz being considerably less common than purple Amethyst or Clear Quartz.
Energetically, Prasiolite is traditionally associated with the Heart Chakra and the connection between physical experience and higher spiritual awareness. Its gentle green colouring reflects its associations with love, compassion, nature, renewal and emotional growth.
