Fluorite is a beautiful and highly distinctive mineral composed of calcium fluoride (CaF₂). It is renowned for its incredible range of colours, including purple, green, blue, yellow, pink, clear and combinations of several colours within a single crystal.
 
Its colours can be influenced by trace elements, structural defects and natural radiation during formation. Colour zoning is particularly common, creating the spectacular bands, layers and rainbow patterns for which Fluorite is so highly prized.
 
Fluorite commonly forms in hydrothermal veins and cavities, frequently alongside minerals such as Quartz, Calcite, Barite and various metallic ores. Its naturally cubic crystal structure is one of its most recognisable features, although it can also form octahedral crystals and more complex formations. With a hardness of 4 on the Mohs scale, Fluorite is relatively soft and should be handled with care.
 
Significant deposits occur throughout the world, including China, Mexico, England, South Africa, Spain and the United States. The mineral's name is connected with the Latin fluere, meaning "to flow", referring to its historical use as a flux in metalworking.
