Rhyolite is a silica-rich volcanic rock formed when viscous lava cools at or near the Earth's surface. It can display an incredible variety of colours and patterns depending on its mineral composition and the conditions present during formation.
 
The beautiful green and earthy material commonly sold under the trade name Rainforest Jasper is a variety of Rhyolite characterised by mossy greens, creams, browns, yellows and occasional reddish tones. Its distinctive orbicular markings, flowing patterns and contrasting areas developed through complex volcanic processes as the material cooled and its different mineral components formed.
 
Much of the material known as Rainforest Jasper comes from Central Queensland, Australia, giving this stone a particularly strong connection with the Australian landscape. Its earthy greens and natural patterns can resemble forests, moss, leaves and miniature landscapes, making every piece completely unique.
 
Despite its trade name, Rainforest Jasper is not technically a true Jasper. Its correct geological classification is Rhyolite, with “Rainforest Jasper” being the familiar name used throughout the crystal and lapidary world for this particular patterned material.
