Satin Spar is a fibrous variety of Gypsum with the chemical formula CaSO₄·2H₂O. It forms in evaporite environments where mineral-rich waters gradually evaporate, leaving behind deposits of crystallising Gypsum. Its long, parallel crystal fibres create the distinctive silky sheen, glowing striations and soft, moonlike appearance for which Satin Spar is known.
 
Although commonly sold as “Selenite,” Satin Spar is physically distinct from true Selenite. True Selenite is the clear, transparent crystalline variety of Gypsum, while Satin Spar is milky, fibrous and chatoyant, displaying a luminous band of light that appears to move across its surface. Both are forms of Gypsum and share the same chemical composition and similar traditional metaphysical associations.
 
Satin Spar is the variety most commonly carved into wands, towers, spheres, charging plates and other energetic tools. With a hardness of only 2 on the Mohs scale, it is extremely soft and can scratch easily. It should also be kept away from prolonged contact with water, as repeated exposure to moisture can gradually damage Gypsum.
 
Energetically, Satin Spar is traditionally associated with purification, spiritual activation and higher guidance. Working strongly through the Third Eye and Crown Chakras, it may encourage the clearing of stagnant or unwanted energy while supporting intuition, spiritual awareness and connection with guides.
