Selenite is a clear, crystalline variety of Gypsum with the chemical formula CaSO₄·2H₂O. It forms in evaporite environments as mineral-rich waters evaporate and Gypsum crystallises, producing transparent to translucent crystals with a beautiful glass-like or pearly appearance.
 
This piece is true Selenite — the clear crystalline form of Gypsum. While the name Selenite is commonly used for the familiar milky-white, fibrous crystal sold as wands, towers and charging plates, that material is technically Satin Spar. True Selenite is distinguished by its clear to transparent appearance and crystalline, glass-like structure rather than the silky parallel fibres and chatoyancy of Satin Spar.
 
Both Selenite and Satin Spar are forms of Gypsum and share the same chemical composition and traditional metaphysical associations, but their physical crystal formations are distinctly different.
With a hardness of only 2 on the Mohs scale, Selenite is extremely soft and can scratch, chip or cleave easily. It should be handled gently and kept away from prolonged contact with water, as repeated exposure to moisture can gradually damage Gypsum.
 
Energetically, Selenite is traditionally associated with purification, spiritual activation and higher guidance.
