Shungite is a fascinating carbon-rich mineraloid primarily associated with the Republic of Karelia in northwestern Russia, where major deposits occur around the Lake Onega region. The Shungite-bearing rocks are exceptionally ancient, dating to around two billion years ago, making their formation and unusual carbon composition of significant geological interest.
 
Unlike a conventional crystal with an ordered crystalline structure, Shungite is a complex carbon-rich material containing varying amounts of carbon alongside silicate minerals and other components. Different grades can vary considerably in appearance and composition, from the relatively rare, lustrous silver-black material commonly sold as Elite or Noble Shungite to the more abundant matte black varieties used for carvings, jewellery and polished pieces.
