Shungite is a rare, carbon-rich mineraloid found almost exclusively in Karelia, Russia, believed to be over two billion years old — forming long before life as we know it existed. Composed of up to 98% carbon, it contains unique spherical molecules known as fullerenes (C60), which have been studied for their antioxidant and purifying properties.
Historically revered as a “stone of life,” Shungite was used in Russia for water purification and healing. Geologically, its origins remain partly mysterious, with theories suggesting ancient seabeds transformed under extreme heat and pressure, and others pointing to possible meteorite influence due to its unusual molecular structure.
Shungite forms within ancient metamorphic rock layers and appears in different types — from the glossy, metallic Elite (Type I) to the more common matte black grounding forms (Type II & III). With a hardness of approximately 3.5–4, it is softer than many stones but highly significant in both structure and energy.
