Variscite, also known as Utahlite, is a rare hydrated aluminium phosphate mineral prized for its soothing shades of green, ranging from soft mint to rich teal hues, often resembling Turquoise. Its green colouring comes from trace chromium, giving it its beautiful earthy vibrancy. Variscite usually forms in compact masses and crusts, with true crystal formations being extremely rare.
Variscite can sometimes occur alongside a white mineral called Crandallite, creating striking natural combinations highly valued by jewellers, especially for cabochon cutting. It was first discovered in 1837 by August Breithaupt and named after Variscia, the ancient name for the Voigtland district of Germany. Notable deposits are found in the United States, Australia, Brazil, Spain and Poland.
With a hardness of 3.5–4.5 on the Mohs scale, Variscite is relatively soft and should be handled with care.
