Clearing, Cleansing & Charging : Understanding the Differences, Common Myths & My Personal Approach

Have you ever heard someone say, "Don't forget to cleanse your crystals," while someone else tells you to clear them... and another person says they need charging?
It can quickly become confusing.
The truth is, these terms are often used interchangeably throughout the spiritual community. Depending on who you ask, you may receive a completely different explanation. That's not because one person is right and another is wrong—it simply reflects the many traditions and personal practices that exist.
Before we begin, I'd like to make one thing clear. Everything shared in this article is based on my own experience and understanding after many years of working with crystals, energy and house clearings. These aren't presented as absolute truths, but rather the methods that have consistently worked well for me. If your practice looks a little different, that's perfectly okay. Spirituality is a personal journey, and we're all continually learning.
What Is Clearing?
For me, clearing is always the first step.
I see clearing as the process of breaking apart stagnant or settled energy before attempting

to remove it. That energy might be left behind after an argument, a stressful period, illness, grief, ongoing negative thoughts, or simply because a space has been energetically "quiet" for a long time.
Think of it like loosening dirt before sweeping a floor. If everything is packed tightly together, it makes sense to break it apart first.
I achieve this using sound.
Singing bowls are my preferred tool because they are designed to produce consistent tones and frequencies that create vibration throughout a space. It is this vibration that I believe helps disturb stagnant energy and encourage movement.
Other tools such as bells, chimes and drums also work beautifully.
If you're just beginning, don't feel pressured to buy expensive equipment. Even clapping your hands or creating rhythmic sound with everyday household items e.g., a saucepan and wooden spoon, introduces vibration into a space. While it won't produce the same frequencies as a quality singing bowl, it is still a wonderful place to begin while you learn and develop your own practice.
What Is Cleansing?
Once the energy has been disturbed, I then move on to cleansing.
For me, cleansing is the process of removing unwanted, lingering or heavy energy from a person, object or space.
If clearing loosens the energy...
Cleansing is what carries it away.
This is where I most often work with smoke from herbs, resins or incense, allowing the smoke to move through the space with intention. Other people may use different methods, and that's perfectly fine. The important part is the intention behind the process.
I use this same philosophy when working with crystals. Before I ask a crystal to support me energetically, I first like to remove any unwanted or stagnant energy it may have collected.

What Is Charging?
Charging has an entirely different purpose.
Rather than removing energy, charging is about restoring it.
Whether you use moonlight, Reiki, meditation, visualisation or another method, the goal is to replenish the crystal or spiritual tool so it feels energetically ready to work again.
One of the biggest myths I see online is the belief that every crystal must be placed under every Full Moon.
Personally, I don't believe that's necessary.
I don't take all my crystals outside every month, and I certainly don't recommend doing it simply because social media says you should.
Instead, I encourage people to trust their intuition.
If a crystal still feels vibrant, connected and energetically strong, then I leave it exactly where it is.
If it feels dull, heavy or as though it has been working hard, then I'll recharge it.
Someone working professionally with crystals every day may recharge certain pieces regularly. A crystal sitting peacefully on your bedside table may only need charging every few months.
There isn't a universal schedule.
Your crystals don't know when the Full Moon is because someone posted about it on TikTok.
Learn to trust your own connection instead of following someone else's routine.

What About Satin Spar?
There are always exceptions and one of the best-known examples is Satin Spar, often sold under the name Selenite.
Traditionally, Satin Spar is believed to possess the unique ability to cleanse, clear and charge other crystals and spiritual tools without needing to be energetically cleansed itself. While many practitioners still choose to occasionally refresh their Satin Spar with intention or moonlight, it is widely regarded as one of the few crystals that naturally maintains its own energetic purity.

Because of this, many people keep a Satin Spar charging plate, bowl or wand specifically for resting other crystals on between uses. It offers a simple and gentle way to refresh your crystals without the need to wait for a Full Moon or perform a lengthy cleansing ritual.
Like everything else discussed in this article, this is based on traditional crystal beliefs and my own experience. Some practitioners may work differently and that's perfectly okay. The important thing is understanding why you're working with a tool, rather than simply following a routine because someone told you to.
Charging and Programming Are Not the Same
Another distinction I make is between charging and programming.
Charging restores energy.
Programming provides direction.
Every crystal already carries traditional energetic associations. Black Tourmaline is commonly connected with protection, Rose Quartz with love and compassion, and Citrine with abundance and confidence.
Programming doesn't replace those qualities. Instead, it focuses them toward your own intention.
Clear Quartz is a perfect example. Traditionally regarded as an energetic amplifier and one of the most versatile crystals, many people program Clear Quartz for almost any purpose. Whether you are seeking clarity, confidence, protection, emotional healing or focus, programming allows the crystal to become a conscious partner in your intention.
How I Approach a House Clearing
When I perform a house clearing, I work through each stage individually because I believe each serves its own purpose.
First, I clear the space using sound. My intention is to break apart any stagnant or settled energy and encourage movement throughout the home.
Next, I cleanse the space using smoke from herbs, resins or incense. This is where I focus on removing the unwanted energy that has already been loosened.
Finally, I place a crystal grid using crystals that have already been cleansed and charged.
Before placing each crystal, I program it with a specific intention. Every crystal is chosen for a purpose—whether that's protection, harmony, grounding, peace, abundance or emotional support. Together they continue supporting the energetic intention of the home long after
the session has finished.

For me, the process simply flows.
Clear.
Break apart stagnant energy.
Cleanse.
Remove what no longer serves.
Charge.
Restore fresh energy to your tools.
Program.
Give that energy purpose.
You Don't Need Every Spiritual Tool
Beautiful tools absolutely have their place. I love working with quality singing bowls, carefully selected herbs, natural resins and crystals because they have been created or chosen for very specific purposes.
However people have worked with energy, intention, herbs and sound for thousands of years using what they had available.
If you're just beginning, don't feel that you need to own everything immediately.
Build your practice gradually.
Learn what each tool does.
Discover what resonates with you.
Let your collection grow because it supports your journey, not because someone online says you "must have" the latest spiritual trend. Who remembers the Moldavite frenzy a few years back? The crystal wasn't the issue—it was the hype. Demand sent prices soaring, the market was flooded with imitation pieces and many people paid premium prices for fakes. It's a great reminder to choose crystals because they genuinely resonate with you, not because social media says they're the next "must-have."
A Final Thought
Perhaps the biggest myth of all is that there is only one right way.
I don't believe there is.
My methods are simply the ones that have evolved through my own experiences and continue to work well for me. Your path may look a little different, and that's perfectly okay.
The most important tools you'll ever develop are your intuition, your curiosity and your willingness to keep learning.
After all, spirituality isn't about following someone else's rules.
It's about discovering what feels authentic for you.
